add in that some of them are close to sources of petroleum in places that pay drillers, transportation and refining costs far less than those costs in the US

              • Probably because Russia is selling oil to them at below-market prices, subsidizing the consumption of gas by Tajikistan in order to retain political and economic influence.

                  • Goddamn, Kaak, are you now reduced to saying that because the price of gasoline in Crapastan is cheaper than anywhere else in the world, the globe needs to get in line with Crapastan?

In addition you have the hidden subsidies mentioned. The minimum wage for employees, environmental standards, workplace standards, safety standards.

And there is a reason economists use PPP in evaluating different countries.

That's because Kaak's dad got a big raise and distorted the statistics.

                          • Yeah, but "hidden subsidies" can't get you to a buck a gallon.

wow-- Tajikistan manages to have cheaper gasoline than the US-- That convinces me!!! After all there couldn't be factors that might differentiate the Tajik market from the US one!! I wonder what a liter of milk costs there versus the US or a block of butter.

A quick look reveals that it is the "poorest"of the former Soviet republics, landlocked etc . They are probably still selling gasoline from old Soviet stockpiles from the 80s
