I already asked him that. He said that the gas companies were all paying their CEOs a bunch of money which was coming from their 500% markup at the pump.

The reason this would not work is that the gas stations don't refine their gasoline. It all comes from the same refineries.

For example. In my state we have one refinery. Last I checked it was owned by Valero. Pretty much every gas station in the state gets its gasoline from that refinery, Shell-Texaco, Exxon-Mobil, Love's, 7-11, etc.

So, if you don't buy from the big guys your still getting the same gasoline from the same refinery. And its still the same amount so there's no pressure on it to reduce the prices it charges.

I'll save you both the research-- Kontiki is right with respect to Alberta. There are rare fixed royalty lands and even some freehold lands coming out of pretty ancient titles where no royalty is paid since the crown actually completely gave up their mineral rights.

But the vast vast majority of Canadian lands is subject to leasehold with respect to mineral rights and percentage royalties apply

It's not the cost I'm talking about, it's the setup. The Mass pike is more modern: you get on, you take a ticket (or you simply use your ez pass). You get off, wherever that is, and you hand over your ticket and pay an amount that corresponds to how far you went (or again, your ez pass does it for you).

On the Garden State (last time I drove on it, several years ago), there are old-fashioned toll plazas... 3 or 4 of them, every 10 miles or so, IIRC. Brutal. Not expensive, per se (it was like 35 cents at each plaza), but it made a bad traffic situation even worse.

And where to you think Jimmy's Gas and Burrito gets its gasoline? Jimmy doesn't have a refinery in his spare bedroom, he buys it from the ExxonMobil refinery. Even if you don't buy it from their station your gasoline came from their refinery.

And they probably wouldn't mind if you bought all your gasoline from Jimmy. They tend to make more profit off the stuff in the store than off the gasoline.

I would also like to point out that from that chart, there are roughly 6.2 billion barrels refined each year in the US.. So John, I'd say that makes the ~1bill that Exxon pulls out of the ground fairly significant.

I've got a question to the participants of this thread. The oil price is set globally, that much is clear.

However, I wonder about gasoline: do specific oil refiners (such as Exxon) have markets everywhere in the world, or do they tend to have markets for their refined products mostly localized in specific countries?
