Yes but what you don't know is that I'm a great leader! I don't 'punish people'. They love me. They WANT to work so they can please me. I don't need to use threats. If I used them, it would mean my leadership has already failed.

Yes, out of all the motivators, Fear is the least effective because it requires that you continually watch and monitor compliance. If you don't watch you can guarentee that you won't get compliance. Most of us do not have the time or the ability to continually watch. But when all other motivation attempts have failed, it is one last final resort, and it must sometimes be used.
Self motivators are always prefered followed by those that motivate through personal fealty to their boss. Personal fealty also requires a burden on the boss, but it is a light burden that I will always happily shoulder.
Which is why my motto is usually
motivate with beer not with fear.
