I saw the protest at the Dallas town hall building and there was, what, one Mexican flag?! There were a ton of American flags.
I'm referring to the Austin protests. I have no idea what went on in Dallas, but I've seen plenty of Mexican flags here in Austin.
Ramo,
Immigration barriers are unlibertarian.
First off, I'm not talking about immigration barriers - if you'd been listening, I'm actually favoring more open immigration policies. I may not be in favor of removing ALL barriers - I favor fluency in English as a requirement, for example, and I do believe that border control is important, especially with global terror threats - but I do favor fairly open immigration.
When I say that flags are symbols of support for illegal immigration, I'm just calling it like it is. The people waving those flags are voicing their support for people who are living here, enjoying the benefits while paying few of the costs.
Secondly, immigration barriers may be unlibertarian, but a pure libertarian state is as unrealistic a hope as an anarchist state, or a shift in the US to socialism. Ain't gonna happen, or at least no time soon. In order to promote freedom and a greater shift towards libertarianism, I've gotta support practical policies that have some hope of being supported and actually working. Hence, my support for some sort of amnesty+English+fine program.

The bill they are protesting provides a clear, if lengthy, path to legal status. This is a positive thing. It isn't racist, and it isn't unfair. It's not gonna put anyone in jail or deport anyone.
The protestors are either ignorant, or see nothing wrong with allowing illegal immigration to continue at the pace of 500,000/year, many of whom don't know and don't learn English, paying far fewer taxes than actual citizens but taking advantage of the things citizens pay for. That is far more unfair than the law itself - unfair to me.

Bull****. Illegal immigrants generally don't make enough to pay substantial income taxes (and often would get EITC if they were legal). They pay sales taxes, property taxes, excise taxes, etc. They also pay payroll taxes, and sure as hell won't get social security benefits from them.
Yeah, they're marching in support of illegal immigrants. So what? Crazy Republicans want to break up families and build a wall on the Rio Grande. They need some support.

Some do, some don't.

Believe me, there are plenty of employers that pay them cash under the table, especially people who are, shall we say, "sympathetic" to their "cause".

Huh? The Republicans' plan provides a path to legalization. If part of the family is here and part is in Mexico, they are already separated, and nothing in the bill prevents the person in the US from going back. There may be a "wall" on the Rio Grande, but there's a pretty big gate, too, and more importantly, minimal penalties, no jail time, and eventual legal status for those who choose to remain.

Waving a US flag, though, doesn't change the ignorance and/or stupidity of their protests.
Doesn't change the ignorance and stupidty of your racist attitude either
Interesting considering Texas was a state founded by immigrants who were encouraged to come but then not only settled the land but STOLD it, by force, from Mexico
Talk about illegal

It's certainly not the protestors who are ignorant. What you're describing is the McCain-Kennedy Bill supported by much of the Senate. It wasn't passed by the full Senate. There was also a Senate compromise that would've basically denied a pathway to citizenship for illlegal immigrants who came in the past couple years, but it fell apart since it was seen as too light on illegal immigrants by said crazy Republicans.
The Bill that was passed by the House makes being an illegal immigrant a felony, and makes providing assistance to an illegal immigrant a felony. That's what they're protesting.

I don't really know why people seem to focus on the immigrants themselves and not on those that employ them. Actually enforcing and strengthening the laws against employing illegals would do alot more to solve the problem.
