Apolytonies! Rate this video card, should I get it? Yay or nay?
I don't see how you can possibly draw that conclusion. Notice how the 7800GS spanks the 6800 Ultra, and it's well known that the 6800 Ultra spanks the 6800 GS.
The 6800GS is half the price(!). It performs as well as a 6800GT (less pipelines, higher clock), and is more or less equal to a 7600GT; except that the former is a good £40 cheaper. The 7800GS is raped by the 7800GT; put into an even more interesting context since the release of the 7900GT which is fantastic value (more reason to upgrade to PCI-X if you're in the market for amazing graphics.
He is best off with the 7800GS, the 6800GS is considerably slower and isn't cheap enough to be worthy of his attention.
Slower admittedly, but not a great deal slower. The fact that the card is half the price is not worthy of his attention?
If he's playing F.E.A.R. for 9 hours a day then you may well have a point, but again, if you're in the market for superb graphics you're in the market for a new system, unless you want to get a decent upgrade at a good price, in which case the 6800GS rules. If he plays the occasional game then imho the 7800GS will be a waste of money.
Another good point, the 7800GS is even louder than a 7800GT, and considering I have a 7800GT roaring like a jet engine next to my desk, that's not good thing!

It is a great deal slower. In future games with more intense SM3.0 code, like Battlefield 2, the 7800GS is over twice as fast. And it's less than twice the price.
The difference is the MADD (multiply/add) capability in the pixel shaders. Each pixel shader in Nvidia's cards has 2 ALUs -- in the 6800GS, this is 24 ALUs total -- only 12 of which are capable of MADD. In the 7800GS, each ALU is now capable of performing MADDs. 32 ALUs total, 32 of which are capable of MADD.
Seeing as how MADDs are extremely popular in SM3.0 code, especially for things like HDR lighting, this is one reason why the 7xxx series is significantly faster than th 6xxx series clock for clock.

Now this is just nonsense. I've got an eVGA Superclock 7800GS and it's noiseless inside my Antec Sonata in 2D mode, when playing games it's faintly visible in the background...
And this is overclocked to 505MHz.

505MHz in 3D mode. There's no point to it in 2D mode....

I find it difficult to imagine that a stock cooler on any 7000-series card could be "faint" when overclocked. I can't get my 7800GT above 495Mhz using the coolbits extension, and it sounds like D-Day. Unless you're using a non stock cooler I'm going to call you out on this one.

I'm using the stock cooler on the eVGA 7800GS CO Superclock.
The 7800GS runs cooler than the GT and GTX because it's got 16 out of the 24 pipelines enabled, so the heat generation is less dense and less overall.
Don't blame all 7000-series fans just because you bought a card with a crap one.
My 7800GS idles at 50C, and under load it's 65C @ 505MHz w/ 1.45GHz RAM. The fan is, indeed, faint during 3D games.

Considering all this, as well as the GeForce 7800 GS’ support for NVIDIA’s transparency AA, PureVideo, and quieter noise levels, the 7800 GS is certainly a nice improvement over NVIDIA’s high-end GeForce 6800 offerings.
Forgot to mention that the 7800GS also offers PureVideo support for WMV9 and h264 for high-definition video playback, while the 6000series doesn't.

Is it a GeForce 6800 GT killer for AGP users? Certainly not. If you already own a high-end AGP card, say for instance a GeForce 6800 GT/Radeon X800 Pro or better, then you’re probably a little disappointed by the performance of the stock GeForce 7800 GS AGP. You’d likely be better served spending your money on a new PCI Express motherboard and graphics card, as the GeForce 7800 GS in stock form just isn’t a huge improvement over the card that you already own. For $350, the current list price of the GeForce 7800 GS AGP, you can buy a GeForce 6800 GS PCI-E and a new motherboard, or better yet, pony up $400 and go for a GeForce 7800 GT and an nForce4 Ultra motherboard.

Which means sweet FA to everyone but the tiny minority of people who will actually benefit from those features.

Yes, but that's not the point.
It's more than just upgrading the motherboard. I've got a socket 754 Athlon 64 and the OP has an Athlon XP -- you also have to pony up for new RAM and CPU -- all just months before the socket on the motherboards is about to become obsolete. That makes that excerpt of the article completely invalid to this.
I've also got a RAID set up on my motherboard, so if I switch mobos it needs to have an identical raid controller...
You squirm too much. Way too artsy, not enough substance. If you're going to debate with science geeks, you're going to have to try way harder. Your rhetoric and red herrings get old, much as Aggie's do. It's amazing you guys can't argue better, given that I hear the most important use of Philosophy these days is to teach people how to construct proper, valid arguments which both of you are apparently completely incapable of.

I think a lot of people will benefit from them soon. Instead of downloading DVD rips people will be downloading high definition DVD rips. And seeing as my Athlon 64 3200+ can't even stabily decode 720p WMV9, being able to watch 1080p WMV9 fluidly is awesome.
It's more forward-thinking...low-res videos are on the way out as bandwidth to users increases and harddrives increase in capacity.

No it's precisely the point. The article clearly says that any owner of a 6800GS upgrading to a 7800GS would be disappointed. That implies that if choosing between them, performance is tight enough for the 7800GS not to be leaps ahead. So it all comes down to performance per price point. The article suggests a more worthwhile upgrade to your system.

How predictable. You feel like you're getting cornered, you start feeling frustrated, and out come the ad hominems. When you feel like you cant get your own way in a debate you start screaming like a spoiled kid. I suppose it makes you feel a little better when you're writing it, but in reality it makes you look like an idiot. No wonder no-one takes you seriously here, which is a shame because you do have some undoubted expertise .
And what's with the Agathon obsession? Do you go to bed only to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, after dreaming about being surrounded by philosophy professors with terrible person hygiene ramming apples down your throat and iPod headphones in your ear, telling you in their lurid, pseudointellectual language to "Dance motherfcker!"?

Actually it doesn't say that at all. Care to read it again?

I'm not cornered, you've no idea what you're talking about. You're not even reading the articles you're quoting.
This is just so typical of debates with modern Philosophy students that it must be pointed out how painful even simple things become when dealing with people like you and Aggie.
