      Glasses are SO 19th century.

Contacts are made of a gel-type substance that is actually about 80% water. There are no sharp edges (when they're hydrated) and the comfort level is total (assuming a good fit). You literally are not conscious of anything being in, or on, your eyes.

The earlier comment regarding oxygen supply is fairly accurate. That's why, even when using the so-called monthly contacts, you should take them out every night. maintenance time is actually very minimal these days. (Take them out, put them in no-rub saline solution overnight, then rinse them off and pop them in in the morning..) For me (long-time user), maintenance is a minute or two per day -- same as keeping glasses clean.

Lasik? As long as there's a failure rate >0, forget it. I remember when they were raving about radial kerototomy a few years back, claim great success and no long term side effects. The people the went under the knife now have scarring on their eyes and an inability to generate enough tears. Funny how the claims for Lasik sound exactly the same. Maybe those claims are true this time, but I'll let someone else play guinea pig.

After wearing these monthly contacts for about two years now there have been no problems. They still get plenty of oxygen. The only problems have come when it's been really dry (due to a furance in a small room taking out all the moisture in the air). They are absolutely wonderful.

Lasik has been around for a long time now. I'll probably get it in a couple years depending on the money situation.

If I wore them, I would.
I wear my contacts during all waking hours.
Glasses are used to get from the bathroom to the bedroom, and from the bedroom to the coffeepot. That's about it.

Contacts aren't good if you have a strong astigmatism. I've always been told glasses will give me better vision.

                      May get LASIK ... someday....

I'm with JohnT here. I don't want anything touching my eyeballs, whether it be slivers of plastic or focused light. I've been wearing glasses for a little over half my life now and it's simply not an inconvenience anymore. No reason to go and do something that makes me twitch just thinking about it.

Glasses isn't an inconvenience as such - it's preferrable to wear glasses when everything is blurred without, but there is a couple of irritating things with them. They get dusty, scratched, fogs up in rain and gives annoying turbulences when cycling.

None of this goes for contact lenses - they even have the plus that you get your full view back.

It is right that you think that you never will get used to stick a finger into your eye the first time you try to do it, but it soon becomes natural and can be done in a minute.

I have used dispensable lenses for some five years without problems - it has actually been a plus since my vision has changed a couple of times and I just got lenses with correct strength instead of buying new glasses.

That is not quite true - if you accidentally flips the lens, there are a sharp edge - though, it only takes a second or two before you get aware of it .

No no no, I have a general neurotic aversion to eyes in general. I can't even stand to see fingers in the vicinity of eyes, whether mine or someone else's.

If you get the monthly kind, you only have to touch your eye once a month.

I wear my glasses to drive and watch TV. That's about it... so I don't think I need contacts for that.
