  • My Boss Is A ...

Hmmm...a tricky situation. He started sometime last summer employed as a supervisor due to his previous experience, and is just approaching 50 and they were keen on him due to his experience...although the fact that he had been in the company 30 years and was only just up to supervisor level very quickly became apparent, yet the management seem unprepared to act.

He was trained and came online as our supervisor last autumn, and the atmosphere of our shift sank - he is miserable and hypercritical and can only see negatives in people, never positive. He managed to say some praise earlier on this week to me for clearing a huge backlog of work due to an issue, which again, I resolved, but it looked like he was struggling.

He tries to cut his hours short if he comes in on days by arriving on one shift and leaving on another. However people do talk, and this has been noticed and gets monitored by everyone, and I think management are aware of this. He is lazy with no sense of urgency, I have to subtly prompt him to do urgent things which he just doesn't do off his own back (as a supervisor, he should know to do these things when requested - he is supposed to be my boss but he should know his responsibilities to the team also) yet expects the team members to perform huge feats in a shift and gets grumpy if they are not done (they are unrealistic, or something else comes up you just couldn't plan for). And you communicate something to him and it just gets lost.

I have had a storming year, I have been the lead analyst on a team analysing a particular active pharmaceutical ingredient. However staff turnover has been high, yet volume has almost doubled, so we have managed to keep on top of things with fewer people than before. Plus there have been numerous production issues which we have had to support, plus I have been lending large amounts of my expertise to the technical development department and production. I don't just analyse, I do batch release up to an extent. As well as being the most experienced analyst in the lab sorting out all manner of problems. I had a prolific year. Yet I was given a very low bonus which made my blood boil for the work I had done (and has made me feel so undervalued I am now trying to cash in on my experience, unfortunately most other jobs out there seem to pay less). And a lot of the downgrade in my performance multiplier, and thus bonus received, promotion, etc, seems to be due to my supervisor's negative attitude towards everyone. All the staff on this shift got less than the other. It's come to a point now where I have submitted a formal grievance against him because it is hindering my progression.

And apparently, he has been awful in terms of attending to his responsibilities. Tasks set to be completed are rarely completed on time, if at all. The supervisor on the other shift ends up carrying him (or the analysts) which has made him furious. Now other analysts on the shift have submitted formal grievances as well due to this. He never completed our reviews on time - our review from last year is still not signed off! And I think this has played a significant part in the reward we got. But I feel I have reached an impass and have to get another job now...it's such a shame as I enjoy my work but feel that my day to day job has been made impossible. And management know what an arsehole he is but don't seem to do anything to act...*sigh*

Should I roundhouse kick him a la Chuck Norris, or should I use a piece of information I have that he has done that would be grounds for immediate dismissal against him Fact is, I don't like being f**ked with...

I would put it differently-- Your current employer can't be shafting you too badly on the pay if all your alternatives pay less!

The reason for huge increases in most fields is because they know they will lose people otherwise. A few years ago I wasn't getting raises and law firms were shedding folks-- Now raises are steady and there are opportunities galore

You may have struck on it-- you need another field-- being the best in a job that tops out at 20K will rarely bring anywhere near the remuneration that being mediocre in one that tops out at 50 K will
