The media had no qualms about showing offensive religious figures in the past (Jesus cartoons, Virgin Mary crap, Jerry Springer the Opera, etc) to exacerbate controversy.
The more barbaric a group acts the more respect their religion receives from the media.

Maybe the problem is that the role of Mohammed in Islam is very different from the role of single Hindu goddess in a pantheon, or the Virgin Mary.

That of course, and a different tolerence for criticism. Therefore, its not actually a double standard as a single standard would not apply to the Virgin Mary in Christianity, this goddess in Hinduism, and Mohammed in Islam.

There is definitely a double standard because Islam causes fear. Nazis also caused fear pre WW2 and appeasement to them resulted in the world's worst war. If we appease Islam, likewise it will either take over the world or result in another world war. It is time to stand up to Islam, print the cartoons, any protesters are too fundamentalist for the west and should be deported or exiled to a Islamic country. Get rid of this menace before the threat is too great to handle.

Hamas should be ashamed that their founding credo is actually much more offensive than that of the Nazi party. Godwin's law may be repealed for the tougher Hamas standard in the near future.
