So then, it is about freedom, eh?

Do you two have any idea the damage that this will do to NATO, and how much it will diminish the willingness of anyone other than charity cases to follow the US into 'defensive' engagements?

BTW, I don't think that was the policy in Japan or Germany in 1945. Do you?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
Then why do we care about internal matters that don't have any effect on us?
Because they're subverting a basic human right. And I think the treaty of westphalia is kinda outdated now (but then I'm into cosmopolitanism) and I do think the US is quite selective as to how much they stand up for these kinda things. Mainly when it suits them.

Well then, we're complete f*cking morons. Why on earth would we actually wage a whole freakin' war to punish some bad guys, but then let the conditions that nurtured the bad guys re-emerge?
I keep picturing this White House conversation on Sept. 12, 2001:
"We need a full-blown War on Terror, now! There's no time to think it through; what are we already doing that can be used as a blueprint?"
"Well, there's the War on Drugs."
"Perfect!"

Was Japan a colony?
No. Japan was an occupied enemy nation, which we stopped occupying only after we were sure that we'd put the institutions in place to assure no further Japanese imperial mischief.
The two situations aren't comparable, I'll admit. But we went into Afghanistan to find bin Laden, smash al Qaeda, and drive from power a government that harbored Islamic extremists. We only succeeded in the third effort, and now it appears that an equally odious government may be emerging that would present the same security threat to the West that the Taliban did.
So, again, what did we accomplish in Afghanistan?

Hmm. If we tried to do to Afghanistan and Iraq what we did to post-war Japan — nurturing a Jeffersonian democracy — it'd make the current violence in the Middle East look positively tame. In effect, it might very well degenerate into a "war between civilizations."
Is that what we really want? Personally, I think it's *crap* that a man is facing death for converting from Islam to Christianity, but if we're going to be true about enforcing a change in views on that, it's going to take a helluva lot of firepower, boots on the ground ... basically, a combination of a Marshall Plan and a societal reconstruction effort, ala Japan.
Frankly, I don't think the West has the stomach for it. So stuff like this is going to happen.

It was an example of American imperialism, yes.
