Yeah, I think the Republicans were mostly looking for something to start distancing themselves.

I hope there is much turnaround all over congress in the next elections...both Repubs and Dems...

        Except Tom DeLay...he's teh awesome.

Security reasons -- Dubai has direct ties with the government of UAE. On the surface, the UAE appears to be our ally, but if you look at their brutal regime, you see that they flog people for adultery, being drunk, and among other atrocious laws.

Not to mention that some government officials in the UAE had questionable ties to Al-Queda IIRC.

I'm surprised at KH's lame attempt in labeling me a racist or xenoephobic, considering I have strongly stood up for Muslims in other threads where other posters have bashed them and their religion/culture.

Errr....they do that in Singapore too, kid. And Singapore has some of the biggest international shipping operations around.

You don't recall correctly. Neither have you demonstrated why running daily port operations poses a security threat.

                    I haven't called you racist or xenophobic...yet.

I said that racism and xenophobia were driving this "controversy"

Tom Delay has consistently fought against pork barrel deals for corporate interests at least

Ideally, I'd oppose any foreign company running US ports. However, I may slide to allow one port per foreign company. Americans need to take better control of their own security interests as well as American ecnomic interests. I don't suggest complete isolationism, but just some common sense.

What actually bothers me about Dubai is that it doesn't take sides. It's too mercenary in its dealings that no one can fully trust it.

Does the government of Signapore have any possible ties with Al-Queda?

Washington Post had an article on February 17, 2002 about questionable shipments connected with Al-Queda that passed through a "lax" system of enforcement in the UAE. This is one example I can recall.

The reason why Bush wants this, is because he wishes to use Iranian dissidents and expatriots, to which there is a large population in UAE, to help overthrow Ahmadinejad of Iran.

I think the reasoning behind the blocking of the port deal is bigotry, but giving Bush this would just move the US one step closer to war with Iran. So when it comes down to brass tacks, I hope Bush does not get what he wants.
