Id say the Republic of Italy has about as much connection to ancient Rome, as the Former Ottoman Province of Greece has to ancient Greece.

Its just a matter of names, thats all.

Good post Spif. I think we should differentiate in regards to culture and the way people live. Russia has to be a seperate civ, even from Eastern Europe. Africa has three different civs. Asia has probably at least three, maybe 4. I still would say there are two European civs. America has to be seperate from England, because it's too different. I would just lump the rest of the former Brittish colonial empire together though. Then there's Latin America, that's one or two.

You can always use the labels for civilizations of the guy who made up the hypothesis of the clash of civilizations in the first place. (Western, Latin, African, Islamic, Indian, East Asian, Japanese)

I wouldn't say that Spain in part of the "spanish" civilization - obviously through heritage, but in terms of cultural and diplomatic exchange, it's European. Plus, Spain is still quite culturally different from Latin America.

Plus, can you even really consider the Continental Europeans much different from Americanand the UK to warrent its own civilization? Politically the UK still has much more in common with the continentals than with America, other than the language, obviously. But seriously - while America is more conservative, Continental Europe more socialist, they still have the same fundamental values. You can't say the same with Russia, China, or the Middle East. Even Latin America has more substantial differences in culture from Europe.

Japan is a seperate civilization, however, because it's honestly a world of its own.

Id say the Republic of Italy has about as much connection to ancient Rome, as the Former Ottoman Province of Greece has to ancient Greece.
Probably the major fact is the change in religion, which dramatically changed both Greece's and Italy's culture. (Let's not forget that the Greeks called themselves Romans until the Greek nationalistic movement )

                  Spanish (Christian:Cath) - mostly in S. America

                  (strong Continental and Arab ties)
                  (native?)

While Isreal is definitely a Civ, they aren't that big really.. also, I removed the Christian:Prot because the areas where it dominates others also dominate (Atheism and Christian:Cath mostly).

                  JM
I wouldn't put 'Slav' as a civilization... Half of them are not Orthodox. It's just a linguistic label. I'd put the Czechs and Poles etc in with the Continentals. Same religion (or lack thereof), same food and same love for beer.

Actually, I'd say if there even are different civs in Europe at all, there are only two: West (prot&cath) and East (orthodox).

you notice one of the Civs (Latin) is more S America then europe...

I guess you could unite Anglo and Continental, I agree (and I would do so before uniting eastern and western

note that I called Anglo and Continental the western civs, this is because they are closer..

I dont think Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru have a lot in common with Mexico or the caribbean countries.

Dont forget that for Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia or for example former spanish colony Filipinas, the USA has been as important or in some cases even more important than Spain in their history/culture.

I think those countries are heavily americanized and are as american as iberian.

Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia are quite different.
They are closer to the colonial america of Spain and Portugal without the american influence.
Although peru and bolivia are predominantly amerindian and South Brazil Argentina and Uruguay italian.
