Hey Gramps -- I need to check that out yet. I have long since known about that movie, but have never seen it. It looks good.

        Yeah

I am a fan of John Travolta, having grown up with Welcome Back Kotter as a teen

He really played a great part and touched in me the need to address underlying social status we give people.

For real, I am a Christian, doesnt make me any better or any worse only forgiven.

I know I have a multitude of faults. I see a movie like this and it challenges my motives and my heart strings

        Anyhoo

        Hope you enjoy it

But Do the Right Thing strikes me as an important film about race relations that actually has some qualified artistry backing it. Some moments of genuine humanity. There's Paul Haggis character ambiguity, which involves every character doing something that is racist and isn't, and then there's Spike Lee ambiguity which involves alot more complexity.

Hell, Soul Man is a more enlightening treatise on race relations than Crash.
Do the right thing sucked. I don't get why Spike Lee is supposed to be good.

Um, Sava, people are making silent films again. Check out many of Guy Maddin's films. And music videos are basically silent films - visuals set to music.

The tyranny of the colour talking picture must be overthrown!

Crash can't be that bad can it? The critics loved it, it did fairly well at the box office. Sometimes I think you guys just bash things because it's trendy to do so.

I do want to rent Crash and see it. I'm still not sure what it's all about. It looks like it might be like Grand Canyon (came out in 1991), but with more racism stuff. And I did like Grand Canyon.

I've heard it's like "Magnolia" with racism stuff.

                      (b) Best Picture is voted on by ALL the Academy members, most of who are technicians...who are not big on gay cowbows.

BTW: I didn't realize until the Best Writer Award that C. Annie Prouxl was the author of the original short story. That would explain why the story (a) is unusual and (b) boring. She's known for being both.

Her previous claim to fame was Shipping News for which she won the National Book Award and I think the Pulizer Prize for Literature. Like most National Book Award winners I've read, Shipping News has no plot. But man, can that lady write. Unfortunately, written prose doesn't translate well up onto the big screen.

With a 77% approval rating, there was certainly a great deal of critical dissent, including most of the critics that I've come to respect the most. And I'm highly insulted by your comment that it's only now trendy to bash Crash - I've been hating on the film ever since I saw it last year, a hatred which only deepens every time I think back to those horrible hours I wasted on it.

There's nothing inherently wrong with silent and black and white films. Society tells you that this is how films ought to be and you quietly conform to it. It's sad, really. And utterly predictable.
