Brokeback Mountain was excellent -- a movie without the usual stereotypical image of gay men. And the story itself is a moving story about unfulfilled love between two gay men who live in an alienating, close-minded society.
I was "poking fun" at what I had highlighted

Since you missed the first time I will quote it again..look carefully at what I highlighted..it was a joke

That's a contradiction in terms IMHO.

I've already pointed out the difference.

Brokeback Mountain is a movie where it confronts real life problems that gay people have to face. And it does an excellent job in appealing to the compassion of viewers regardless of sexual orientation by packaging the story in one of forbidden love in an alienating society.

Brokeback Mountain is not the first movie to seriously and sensitively deal with issues gays face, but it has done so from a different approach than past movies. And it's also not the first movie about gays that avoids stereotypical images but that still does not deny where the movie actually has made a refreshing approach/theme.

By the way, I hope some people knew which movie I was referring to when I mentioned Making Love -- it was released in the early 1980s I think, and Kate Jackson was one of the actors.

CLOSED minded. CLOSED is the opposite of open.

Close is the opposite of near.

I only gave it one thumbs up

IMO, it was the best movie in that group

pretty poor group of movies to choose from for best picture this year

                      Brokeback
                      Crash... meh
                      walk the line... ugh
                      munich

and the rest aren't worth mentioning

was Good Night Good Luck in there too?

                      I forget...

GNGL was okay...but not good enough for best picture.

Also, the whole black and white thing turns me off... seriously, why do people think making a movie in black and white to give the illusion it is taking place in the past, is a GOOD THING? Movies, at first, were only black and white because the technology for color didn't exist. To purposely make a movie in black and white just because you want the illusion of taking place in the past is just the dumbest ****ing thing imagineable. I understand that the didn't want to cast anyone for the role of McCarthy... because they didn't want to be accused portraying him in a bad way, and because, really, I think they wanted to let his "performance" stand for itself (based upon interviews I've seen with George Clooney).

I'm reminded of a seen in the movie where one of the characters asks, "Which tie should I wear?" the other person says, "The blue one..."

                      ...

WHICH ****ING ONE IS THE BLUE ONE????

Thinking of the past in black and white just because movies from that time period were in black and white is just completely IGNORANT and stupid. And furthermore... purposely making a movie in black and white just to give the illusion of it taking place in that time period is even more ignorant and stupid.

It's not artistic... it's not clever...

                      It sucks.

And this is one of the big problems with Hollywood. There is nobody around these people to say, "HEY... THIS SUCKS!!!"

They are all kissing each others' collective asses. They dress up and throw these huge parties, have these huge awards shows. And it's all them giving the awards to themselves. Let's be honest here.

It's like little kids having a tea party.

It's disgusting. It makes my stomach turn.

And then we get these ****ing hypocrites doing ads for cancer research or stuff for kids in Africa or something...

then I turn on MTV's cribs and I see the same people in their ****ing 80 bedroom houses and wearing their $10,000 dollar slippers while they wipe their ass with $1,000 bills after they get done taking ****s (in the bathroom where they have 200 inch plasma screen TV's )

                      okay

somehow this turned into a rant

                      I think I'll stop now

But I'm just curious then . . . . . what movies do you think are good ones, that deal with racism and ethnocentrism?
Well, to be perfectly honest I don't watch that many movies that are about "race". But Do the Right Thing strikes me as an important film about race relations that actually has some qualified artistry backing it. Some moments of genuine humanity. There's Paul Haggis character ambiguity, which involves every character doing something that is racist and isn't, and then there's Spike Lee ambiguity which involves alot more complexity.

Hell, Soul Man is a more enlightening treatise on race relations than Crash.

Black and white is an aesthetic choice. Now I haven't seen that particular film but given the sort of drama it is, black and white strikes me as a perfectly acceptable choice.

Movies I have enjoyed that dealt with race include:

                              Rosewood
                              A Time to Kill
                              Crash
                              Amistad
                              Glory

Maybe there's a couple of others I have seen but don't recall right now.

I understand the use of black and white for other reasons...

but to give the illusion that something is taking place in the past?

it just shows how small minded some people are... as filmakers...

why not just make silent films again?

It would have been refreshing to see the characters in color, then see the TV broadcasts in black and white. Then you get closer to the events, IMO.

Having the movie in black and white makes it seem like it just is something that happened in the past... just "stuff that happened and it's in black and white"

I mean, directors and producers back in the day would KILL for the kind of technology we have. Can you imagine being able to see all those classic movies made with modern technology? Or seeing all those actors and actresses with the clarity and quality of picture we have now?

Why would anyone want to purposely downgrade the quality in making a movie?

Especially for the purpose of time?

                                It is just stupid.
