Honestly, I fail to see the difference between regionalism, a form of provincialism, and nationalism, also a form of provincialism. It's a matter of degrees.

Regionalism tends to lead towards things like, "Damn ****in' Southerners" and the like. Nationalism tends to lean towards things like, "Damn ****in' Dutch".

Regionalism, by the way, has led to some rather nasty events. The Kwangju Massacre, for instance, had a large regionalist component--not nationalist. It was a massive, oppressive move on what were considered Korean hicks by the Korean elite. Or, the American Civil War. Plenty regionalist sentiment there, rather than nationalist. Everybody was American, they just had different ideas of how America should be led.

Honestly? Regionalism has just as much to do with sports teams as Nationalism does.

It's just easier to see Nationalism because few people fly city flags on their cars.

As far as the international competitions and bits, would it matter to you if the whole world was under one government? Then they wouldn't be competing internationally--they'd be competing regionally.

Is that just as problematic for you?

Canada suffers a scare against South Africa, needing a comeback rally in the 9th to win. South Africa isn't supposed to be a very good team as they have no major league players. Canada may have had an offgame this time, but right now it looks like Mexico will be more likely to accompany the USA to the next round.

The Dominicans put up 11 runs against a very strong Venezuelan pitching staff. The Dominican Republic is going to be very hard to beat with all of their offensive firepower. Just imagine how tough they would be if the Pedro Martinez, Gurerro, and Guillen playing.

Italy completely destroyed Australia 10-0, which I don't think was expected, alot of people of thought Australia was the strong team. It'll be really hard, but Italy is now in a position to advance to the next round if it can somehow manage an upset againt the Dominican Republic or Venezuela.

Its the 'cricket effect'. Most of their players started out playing cricket. As everyone knows, the zen-like aspects of cricket allow the players to develop super powers that they can occasionally use, much like the shaolin monks.

They're mentioning the possibility that the Canada-US bloodbath may end early due to the mercy rule.

Oh God, this is too priceless.

I wonder if all these people who were saying how meaningless this was will raise a stink if the US gets beat down?

8-6 Canada, now, after a monster inning by the US.

I watched some hockey (because I was going through hockey withdrawl)

and about 20 minutes of women's curling

a few of the women on the US women's curling team were doable

in total, I'd say watched about less than 3 hours of total Olympics

most of the hockey I watched was while I was doing other stuff, though...

only 1 of the games I was paying full attention to...

                                I forget which

nothing about it was worth watching... any random regular season NHL game would have been more interesting
