Nothing like a wife carrying contest to spark some Finnish national pride.

"Wife carrying" just doesn't have the primeval touch of kärringkånk.

          What's it in Finnish?

            akankanto.

As you see, I have put it in my hobbies ever since I registered

It's great, because Akka (who will be carried) is little.. derogative term these days. You just don't say a woman is akka today ...

            SO it's cool stuff

"Kärring" isn't exactly a friendly term either - my dictionary translates it as "old woman, hag".

I'd ... compare "Akka" to that same word as well.

Interestingly enough the words ukko and akka are ancient names for the male and female overgods in the Finnish mythology. Their modern slightly derogative nuance maybe a result of an unconcious christian depreciation for the pagan past.

These are also probably one of the oldest words in the Finnish language, which makes the _old_ man, _old_ woman nuance even more appropriate.

I would like to see these words reclaiming the respect and stature they deserve.

Then I must mention the utterly bizarre etymology of "kärring" - it's originally a dimunitive of karl "freeman".

Interestingly enough, in Oslo, "kjerring", pronounced pretty much like "kärring", is hardly ever used and means "old hag", while in Trondheim it simply means "wife".
