heh here at college which is by an American Unversity... we had algebra that I did in ~6th/ 7th grade elementary school in Croatia (12-13yo) as a part of Business Accounting degree and some American students were struggling ... otherwise perfectly normal people

Math is required for inner enlightment. Those who do not understand it, or its implications in both real life and the search for truth are worthless humans.

Oh, believe it or not, this post is serious.

Yeah, apparently I misremembered. Basic algebra comes in at year 7 (age 11)

Anyway for the exams that we can use as qualifications for jobs it wouldn't be a question of passing an "algebra" exam.

I can't really find what's required there. For us to get GCSE C standard (Maths and English at C level is the minimum employers require for most jobs), in the exams taken at age 16 (year 11), you need to be able to solve quadratic equations by completing the square, factorising and using the quadratic equation including algebraic fractions, inequalities, simultaneous equations etc.

For A-Level to get into a university course with math requirements you'd have go get into, calculus, differential equations and ****.

For us algebra started in 9th grade. But I took it in 8th.

How much algebra have I done since? None. Waste of time.

I think algebra 1 was in 7th grade... maybe 8th. I liked basic algebra. Algebra II, however, was not my friend. Of course, part of that was the teacher.

It started in 7th grade for me. A teacher can make or break the subject. It would be hard to weed out the bad ones.

It's not a bad life, in the cosmic scheme of things, but it doesn't require much preparation.
I'd bet a number of those people who end up like that at some point regret it and wish they did more. Particularly in a country where life can be hard for poor people.

Maybe some of those people are fine with it. But at the time you complete 8th grade, you are not yet mature enough to understand the implications choosing a life of poverty, which as a non-high school graduate they would be destined for. Hell, I just graduated college recently and a number of my friends still don't seem mature enough to be making decisions for themselves. That's why it's important to keep them in the high school and keep trying to get them to learn. If they later want to decide it's all bull**** and that they want to work at Wal-Mart, they can do that at age 18.
