  • I fault the government with lying to the American people about the reason for initiating this dubious crusade, but I don't fault them for starting the impending civil war. Saddam Hussein wouldn't have lived forever. There is no guarentee that his sons would have been able to make a smooth transition ot power after him. Eventually the Shiites would have risen up against their Sunni repressors, probably with outside help. The question is, which side would we and the rest of the world have taken?

    • Saddam isn't that old so he could probably have ruled some 20+ years more.

His sons haven't displayed the political abilities dady had, but they certainly has proven they have the nessecary brutality. A transition from father to son may not be smooth, but would probably have worked adding yet more 30 years under the hussein family rule.

Waiting 50 years for a peaceful solution of a problem is quite long.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

        • The Iraqi government is now saying that civil war is imminent and that it may put tanks on the street.

On the on hand leaders of the major Sunni political party has proposed returning to negotiations on forming a national unity party, yet on the other hand a major Sunni cleric has announced that the Shiites are unilaterally responsible for starting a civil war. I guess the bombings of Shiite mosques and religious ceremonies doesn't count.

Have we heard anything out of al-Sadr in the past week? I wonder if he can maintain his affiliation with the Sunni insurgents in the face of the intensifying struggle between Shiites and Sunnis?

The kids were brutal enough that at some point they might have helped daddy go get those forty virgins that he so richly deserved. Then they could have done the same for each other. Remember, dear ol' dad had no qualms about helping along those who helped him into power.

BTW, when they died they were found in the company of a 13 year old boy. Did we ever find out why?
