I kept ending up with one huge yellow star which covered the whole screen.

I can't work out what that star is and what makes it grow, maybe its a sponge and water makes it expand?

It's gone through about 30 cycles now. Unfortunately there's an error in the game code which allows fire to melt away the wall slightly, so it won't keep going forever.

At around 50 cycles breakthrough was achieved. It's gone through two cycles since then, and I believe this next one will be its last hurrah. The period has gone from ~45 seconds immediately prior to breakthrough to ~5 minutes on this last one (as the opening was widened each time and the escaping flow proportionately increased). Next flameout will open it wide enough so that the incoming flow can't keep up with the outgoing flow.

Try adding fire-supressant into your design, either spouts or pockets of water. That way if the fire eats through a portion of the structure it can be put out hopefully before it can do serious damage.
