    Damn, can't hindus spell?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

IIRC there were a number of verses of the Rigavedas devoted to the praise of getting drunk. In fact Indira is the Hindu deity of thunder and booze. perhaps it would have been more appropriate to have India's former female prime minister featured in the ad?

I'm with aneeshm. Its a pretty crass ad (or at least I'm taking his word for it since I don't know much about Hinduism or the SoCo ads). Defending the right to do something isn't the same as defending those who excercise that right to offend othere unnecessarily.

Christians were protesting a few months ago about the commericialization and secularization of Christmas here in this country. Putting aside church/state issues for a moment, I agree with them. As I agree with the Hindu protesters and the non-violent Muslim protesters.

Insulting someone's heritage and religion so you can make a buck or prove a point is in bad taste and we shouldn't condone it.

I think Hindus should be offended, and I'd hope Christians would raise a stir if aneeshm's suggested retaliation smearing Jesus went forward.

Don't mistake soma for alcohol .

And you are confused between Indra and Indira . Indra is the god of gods and thunder and soma . Indira is something else entirely .

I agree with Ozzy, there's no problem with protesting something peacefully. I may disagree with the position of the protestors strenuously, but it isn't the protest that's the problem. In this instance there's a really good chance that the advertiser simply didn't realize that this would be offensive to some people (see recent thread on America's view of Hinduism).

Incidentally, the Buddha has been spoofed and insulted multiple times, especially in the west by idiot whities, but no Buddhist has ever burned a western embassy over it.
