The Altera Centauri collection has been brought up to date by Darsnan. It comprises every decent scenario he's been able to find anywhere on the web, going back over 20 years.
25 themes/skins/styles are now available to members. Check the select drop-down at the bottom-left of each page.

So? We already put up with ads in newspapers, magazines, pretty much everything except books. I would gladly ignore a tiny ad at the bottom of book pages if it meant books were free.
To each his own. I'd much rather pay for a book than put up with ads in one. One of the things I love about books is that I can read one for hours and hours and hours and never once be implored to buy something. In fact, I've increasingly moved away from ad-based media in general (to teh extent that's possible), just because I hate advertising so much. I watch less TV than ever, never really listen to the radio, tend to read only low-ad-content magazines, etc. So please, leave my books alone...

Well I don't think there is anything wrong with having a choice. Ad based free versions or pay for, sans ads, versions.
Depends on how big the ads are as well. If they are like... half the page, then it gets grating.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.â€

I guess much of the content would be free, some would be pay, and some would be ads.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

From the information in this thread, the newer type of e-books sounds promising . . . . . .
1) save money when you want new "books" -- if or once ebook purchases become dramatically cheaper than buying hardcopy books
2) save physical space in your apartment/loft/house/office -- you will finally have shelves freed up for your bannana collection!!
3) incredible portability -- as someone already noted, carry almost your entire library in one ebook tablet!!
The best thing about ebooks is you can hook them up to a speech synthesizer and have an incredible audiobook.

I don't see why people would really go for books over audiobooks if you are going to go digital. You can get audio books for under $10 generally...including big names like Dan Brown.
Huh... ever tried to listen to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason?
Besides, reading by yourself is much faster than having a stupid voice do it for you.
Something for which it can be so ****ing awesome is to download course books in the public domain (there are a lot of them in philosophy) and hack the others and share the price of a single download amongst friends.
Now we need a Google ebook searcher to sort through your data and we've got a winner.
