Yes, Thorn, I fully believe that this is going to get bigger (much bigger) before it is over. Wether or not it turns into a full scale war, I don't know. I hope not. If it does, the numbers of people and the numbers of countries will rival WWII, but it will be decidedly one sided; so I don't think that the chaos (or at least the chaos that will be seen by a majority of Americans) will be as all encompassing.

While I'm not a fanatic of Nostradamus I think some of his predictions are worthy of noteing.

I'm all for a little sensitivity being taken into consideration vs freedom of the press. But, on the other hand, for the muslims to be upset is a bit extreme considering the usual daily anti-jew crap that is produced. If they start showing a little sensitivity, then it should be reciprocated. But until then........

If anything, that "WW3" has started on Sept. 11.

But I still think that the clash of civilizations won't occur. The Iraqi debacle and the current demos make it clear to the west that the Muslim world is a powder keg that doesn't get policed so easily, and that a sensible approach is needed.

The US and UK have just given a bone for the Muslim world to chew, by not supporting the Danes (despite the fact that Denmark is a loyal ally of them). They have also taken a more subtle approach to Iran's nuclear strategy than 4 years ago, and they have shown quite a bit of restraint after Hamas' victory.

The way I see it, it is becoming obvious to most western powers that the Muslim world can only change from within and not from without. It might well result in fewer humiliations dealt to the Muslim world in the coming years, and as such to the beginning of healing the wounds between the East and the West.

To be honest, I think Spiffor is being hopelessly optimistic. Can we honestly think there will be any improvement which will come at the end of a process that doesn't involve an awful lot of bloodshed? If there truly is a clash of civilisations; and it's looking that way, then I fail to see how both can still exist afterwards.

My money, and my hopes in such a conflict would be pinned to the West. I dont particularly want to live in a backward medieval society many times worse than that which even fundie Christians advocate!

Nostradamus's stuff is a bunch of nonsense. His prophecies are so vauge that they are meaningless, just like newspaper horoscopes. I rember a big hullaballo about the end of the world happening in 1999 and nothing happened.
