So, that's Rasmunsen being crucified, his throat slashed and his tongue being pulled out on the picture? He'll have something to tell his grandkids about, for sure

A newspaper in Greenland, Sermitsiaq, has decided to reprint 3 of the drawings of Muhammed. The editor, Poul Krarup, motivates the decision by wishing to inform the Greenlanders as to why the Muslim world is in uproar.

The editor does not expect any major reactions to the drawings, for the simple reason that there aren't too many Muslims in Greenland.

"As a matter of fact I know of only one," he says, "it's a a factory manager in Ilulissat who came here from the Middle East. I don't think he'll cause any major disturbance."

                Re: Danish embassy invaded

Demonstrators pushed their way into the lobby but were prevented from reaching the embassy itself, on the 25th floor.

They pelted Danish symbols in the lobby and outside the building with rotten eggs and tomatoes, and one report said they tore down and burned a Danish flag.

                  From this yahoo article.

"This means the whole story will continue and that we are back to square one again. The government of Denmark has to do something to appease the Muslim world," Attia said.

Attia is Egypt's ambassador to Denmark. Even the ambassadors can't seem to grasp that the government cannot be held accountable for an independant newspaper.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yuri Thamrin said the dispute was not just between Jakarta and Copenhagen.

"It involves the whole Islamic world vis-a-vis Denmark and vis-a-vis the trend of Islamophobia," he said.

So much for the Muslim v muslim debate. According to this guy, it IS all of them.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy condemned the protests in a television interview.

"I am totally shocked and find it unacceptable that -- because there have been caricatures in the West -- extremists can burn flags or take fundamentalist or extremist positions which would prove the cartoonists right," he said.

Hmmm... he's right. This is life immitating art. How sad.

In the last thread, some stated that they wern't worried about this because freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press had already been fought for and has already been won. Our freedoms and liberties have been fought for and they have been won, but that does not mean that we shouldn't fight for them again when someone is trying to take them from us. This is exactly what is happening. Islam is trying to take our freedoms. Now I am not saying that we should go out and actually fight this "Clash of Civs", but to think that we can just sit back idily as our freedoms are being attacked is just going to lead to more attacks on our other freedoms.

Who gives a **** about his opinion? Last I heard, the Indonesian foreign ministry doesn't speak for Muslims as a collective.

Meh... yeah, I know it was a stretch and figured someone would call me on it. Just skip that part then. Where I feel it is probably true (or close to being true), I have no way of proving it.

This has so many similarites to the Roman Empire being taken over by Christian fundamentalists, burning down temples and libraries while people either converted of left cities to hide in the villages.
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I'd support a good old fashioned machingunning of the invaders in order to show them what happens to people who attack embassies. The 1979 embassy take over shows how serious such things need to be taken and exactly what measures need to occur to prevent them.

considering hes the FM of the largest muslim state, and is actually part of democractically elected govt, id be very concerned about what he says, even if he doesnt speak for ALL muslims.

OTOH I would take statements from govt officials in context - given the anger on the street, they cant exactly start making speeches about freedom of speech and quoting Mill (Karzais statement also needs to be in this context)

Im more concerned about the kinds of govts and movements that promote A. The idea that only what the govt approves can be published (which leads quite naturally to the assumption that what is published was govt approved) and B. Virulently antisemitic propaganda, including some quite nasty cartoons.
