    Out of curiosity...

How long did she wait from the time it was determined hip surgery was necessary until she received the procedure....?

      Tough old bird. Good.

That was just before Christmas, 20 December I think. She could have waited much longer, as is normally the case here (3-6 months), but two things made her move up the line.

Firstly, she'd been having these troubles for almost a year and been to countless scannings and checks before they finally decided on 20 December that it was the osteoarthritis. They took a looong time making the right diagnosis, and the arthritis had gotten very severe at that point in time.

Secondly, she agreed to be part of a test group of patients, where the doctors would test different ways of preparing them for surgery and different follow-up things once they got home. That moved her forward in the line quite a bit.

So, strictly speaking ~6 weeks from diagnosis to surgery.

Not bad. We go to the Supreme Court over these matters here...

I know some of ya'll must be getting tired of hearing of this, but just one final report from me (because it's so crazy I just have to tell) and then I'll shut up.

I just spoke to my mom and she's doing fine. She's 73, she had the hip replacement on 2 February, got her stitches out (staples) on 14 February, and last Saturday (18 February) she went dancing for 3½ hours non-stop. Waltzes and the like to contemporary music, as she likes to do at least once a week.

I was baffled to hear this, but it went fine and she said she "felt great" afterwards.

The only trouble she has is reaching to tie her shoes, and vacuuming.

A good son would do the vacuuming for her.

I guess so, but I'm the only son she's got.

to your mom for still being able to dance at 73, and after hip surgery. I know of a woman that age who should imitate her

Again, sorry folks for persisting in posting about this, but it is very much on my mind again, and I feel it's a bit easier to cope when I can relate it to others..

My mom had surgery again today, on the other hip, the left one, it was in fact reconstructive surgery to follow up on the first surgery she had in that side in 1995. Today's operation should be the last, and I'm relieved to report that it too appears to have gone well.

I just spoke to my mom on the phone, and she was fully conscious following the procedure some 4 hours ago. She had local anaesthesia like last time, but had to be given morphine after the surgery, because the pain was too intense after the anaesthesia staerted to lift.

She was in good spirits, though she was in some pain still, but she indicated that her biggest worry was the dry sensation in her mouth because of the morphine, which tells me the pain must be on a somewhat tolerable level. Dinner time was coming up and she was looking forward to a plate of soup.

Another thing she was looking forward to was the surgeon informing her tomorrow of exactly what was done and how the reconstruction was carried out.

And me coming to visit for 3 days from this Friday. As am I. I'm in Copenhagen, she's across the country in Western Jutland.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the doctors to tell her that the reconstruction was a success, and that she gets to enjoy a lasting, stable hip joint.

And I will of course keep you posted on whether she goes dancing again 11 days from now, like last time.
