What was the course about? How old were the students?
We once had a teacher ask in a test what the "trigger of the second world war" was. Everyone (including myself) replied it was the German attack on Poland except 2 people who gave the right answer (fake attack on Gleiwitz radio station). All of us, even those who had it right, were sure she had never pointed it out in class. Those two had it told by their clever parents the night before

Wrong, the correct answer was 'Bush'.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
Funny one, don't know their own civil war but they've heard of France.
If you know that war is something that usually involves countries, and that there is a chance France was once in a war that had the US involved in it... wouldn't that indicate a chance of knowing the concept of a Civil War?
Also, this makes me wonder what social background those people were from. I mean, even in really lame TV shows do Civil War reenactments get portrayed. They must have had a bloody *idea*, especially after the course.
