I don't actually think Newfs are dumb and neither does anybody else. The Newfie joke is a time-honoured tradition in Canada.
I know you don't, and I am not sure how is it really amongst candians, but I usually know that a lot of the "geography" condescention can get rather ugly. Plust, it's not equally distributed. For example, I only know that newfies are dumb, and the people in quebec are attacked as french. I don't know of any other canadian stereotypes, and I should know them equally well ( or not very well, as the case might be )

Newfoundland is full of dumbasses, Quebec is full of whiners, Alberta is full of hicks, BC is full of hippies.

That's the way things go in Canada.

I should add: Ontario is full of Leafs fans.

Az, I'm quite certain there is nothing racist about newf jokes, they're really light hearted.

I do, personally, get frustrated with stupid people, by which I mean people unable to grasp simple concepts beyond the colour of their hair. I had a discussion earlier this evening with someone who didn't know when the Second World War occured.

Someone said earlier that they can't control their intelligence, that's bollocks. It's the easiest thing in the world to spend some time in the library, and make an effort. Becoming an interesting person is something that's within the grasp of everyone in my opinion; they just have to work for it. I suppose that's the stumbling block for a lot people; so why should I have any respect for someone who is "stupid" as a result of their own sloth?

At work, I deal with people who other people, academics, might consider stupid, but I don't think so. They might not be able to spontaneously quote Mill and Montaigne, but they're good at what they do, and when it comes to dealing with people and everyday life, they have much common sense, experience and intelligence, so I would not consider them intelligent. I would not consider traditional academic pursuits as meaning on their own that someone is "not stupid".

I guess I equate stupid with self-inflicted ignorance. I don't see why people who are so deserve my respect, time or attention.

                            Re: Newfie Jokes

Co-incidently, I got this in an e-mail yesterday:

Recently a routine RCMP patrol parked outside a bar just off the main
                            Highway at Goobies, Newfoundland.

After last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated
                            that he could barely walk.

The man staggered around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the
                            officer quietly observing.

After what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five different
vehicles, the man managed to find his car which he fell into.

He sat there for a few minutes and then threw a hook and line out the
window and seemed to be trying to catch a fish.

A number of other patrons failed to observe this crazy drunk as they
left the bar and drove off.

Finally the drunk started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it
was a fine, dry summer night) flicked the blinkers on, then off a couple
of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights.

He pulled in the hook and line and moved the vehicle forward a few
inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes
as some more of the other patron vehicles left.

At last, the parking lot was empty; he pulled out of the parking lot and
started to drive slowly down the road.

The officer, having patiently waited all this time, now started up the
patrol car, put on the flashing lights, and promptly pulled the man over
and carried out a breathalyzer test. To his amazement the breathalyzer
indicated no evidence of the man having consumed any alcohol at all!

Dumbfounded, the officer said, I'll have to ask you to accompany me to
Headquarters. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken."

"I doubt it," said the truly proud Newfoundlander.
                            "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."

How important is it to know when the second war war was? I know all about it, but I'm a history buff, and a warfare buff. But I don't expect other people (especially americans) to know anything about it.
