It generally doesn't have much bearing on whether or not I *like* a person. I have a friend who is... well... not the smartest person out there. She's really nice, though. It's occasionally painful, 'cause I like her, but mostly it just doesn't matter.

Stupidity can irritate me, but I try to remember that sometimes I act stupidly too. I've done a bunch of stupid things. So, while I do have a general reaction of distain for blatant stupidity, I try to put it in perspective. And I generally treat people with respect, unless they've convinced me they don't deserve it.

Pretty much. It's the West Virginia of Canada.

Newfie baymen are no more or less stupid than your average Ontarian hoser.

Not even the same ballpark. St. John's is a booming, cosmopolitan city. Sure its small, but its growing.

Not exactly. Newfies aren't really known for their inbreeding. It's more like the entire southern US up to the Texas-New Mexico border.

I was joking, of course. I've actually never been to Newfoundland. I have family connections (very tenuous connections), though, and I've heard some stories. The people telling the stories, of course, live in Toronto or the USA now.

I thought of that immediately, actually. As I hit "submit" I thought "should I change it to Mississippi or something?"

Actually, thats one thing they are known for. 500 years of relative isolation will do that.

Not quite. The Southern US is a whole hell of a lot more developed than this place, for one thing. St. John's is pretty good, but the rest of the place... my god.

I don't mean it in a judgmental way, its just a fact. We're a remote place. Its getting better though.

I don't actually think Newfs are dumb and neither does anybody else. The Newfie joke is a time-honoured tradition in Canada.

                        I know that, and I wasn't offended.

But honestly, Newfie jokes from Canadians are just "blonde" jokes replaced with the word "Newfie". Newfoundland "newfie" jokes, on the other hand, are hillarious. No one makes fun of themselves better than Newfoundlanders.

And for those who don't know, Newfoundland is beautiful. The street I live on looks alot like this:

I love this place... so far.

Well, lets be honest. Alot of it isn't necessarily mean spirited, but its pretty condescending. We're actually seeing a backlash here against the mainland and more a move towards independence (though not necessarily in the Quebec sense).... and I'm sure this province constantly being the butt of every joke in the country isn't helping that any.

Please. Toronto, Quebec, BC and the Prairies all take their lumps too. Ontario outside the GTA and the North are pretty much the only ones that get off light...
