  • How do you treat stupid people?

Yes sometimes I get very upset how posters here refer to people as stupid. Note this isn't about me, but about comments made in the hostile thread. You guys seem to think stupid people are not worthy of your attention! What's up with that? Some of the sweetest people I know, while I wouldn't call them stupid, they aren't very bright. Intelligence is not everything.

You guys just amuse me. I am very curious how some of you act in normal society. As most people are not smart, so do you not talk to them at all? Are you all incapable of being friends with someone of average or below average intelligence? What about your stupid relatives?

Now I'm using the word stupid very loosely. I'm not talking about mentally retarded. I admit, I cannot hold conversations at that level. And mentally retarded people do not interest me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as if some of you are very prejudiced against stupid people. And to me, that seems wrong. People cannot control their intelligence any more than they can control their skin color...

I usually get bored with people if their intelligence is too far below mine, but that could also happen if the person is intelligent but shares none of my interests.

Yeah I guess it depends on your interests. If you only have "smart" interests, you aren't likely to find anything interesting.

But even most posters here watch popular movies, and listen to popular music. There's always something to talk about.

I've been in martial arts courses with "working class" people, ie with no degree etc. I'd never call any of them stupid, and I find it harsh when you say "most people aren't smart". I find it easy to be friends with non-academics. Many Apolytoners will disagree.

I am not prejudiced against anyone. I try to judge people according to their actions and their responsiveness to new ideas, and if I think they're missing out on something I try to point it out to them. I don't really think of people as stupid, or smart. I do think that some people are, at any given time, better than others in a particular task, or action. But the values I assign to them can and do change.

My observation is that boring and 'stupid' are not that correlated.

I agree. Someone doing something stupid can often be quite entertaining.

More generally I try not to think of anyone as "stupid"-- On here they may just be trolling or perpetually drunk or something

I have nothing against stupid people, per se; I'm far more likely to respond to people based on their level of basic human decency rather than their level of intelligence.

That being said, I hate it when someone else's stupidity manifests itself as incompetence and keeps me from getting something done, or from having something done. Nevertheless, I used to be pretty patient with incompetence. Then I moved to the Philippines...

I get frustrated easily by people who aren't on my wavelength. That goes for many things: intelligence, opinions, religions, etc.
