  • What's so great about Babylon 5?

I rent the first DVD of season 1 and just watched the first show. Can't say I'm impressed. The story was boring and the space battles look like something out of a bad videogame... Looks like another crappy sci-fi series... And why does the Centurion ambassador has a foreign accent, whereas all the other centurions don't?

You get that from watching the first show?

Go back and watch the first show of any series you like, I guarantee you won't be impressed by it either.

Babylon 5 starts off slow. Stick with it and you will love it. Definitely the best show I ever watched. Puts those stupid star trek shows to shame.

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

The first show of Foyle's war was pretty good. Its a great show, btw. I highly recommend it.

I have fever, I fell last friday and my right arm is K.O, haven't been sleeping much since then, thanks to the pain. I'll stay home, thank you very much. But I agree with you about sci-fi tv. I just hoped B5 was the exception.

Babylon 5 definitely is the exception. There were a few others that were half way decent, but in general sci fi sucks because the stories lines are usually just plain stupid. One of the things that was great about Babylon 5 was that the story line was really good and it played out like a book. Season 3 is by far the best. Also it has really good acting in it unlike certain other sci fis and the music is the best I have seen out of just about any show. I'm not really a sci fi fan, but I would recommend this show to anyone. It is to this day my favorite show ever.

Oh, and the first episode is just plain terrible. I didn't really get into the show until the second season. Half way through the first season the show starts to pick up if I remember right. It's been about 8 years or so since I last saw it.

B5 is great. I remember when I was living in Moscow in 98 they played the entire show (IIRC) at a pace of 1 episode per weekday. A nice touch of home, and since the ruskies were just slapping the russian over the english, I could understand most of what was said.

B5 gets a lot better as it goes on. Also, the quality of the CG improves--while it never gets to the level you see in say, Firefly, new Star Wars, post-First Contact Star Trek, or nBSG, they were quite revolutionary for the time.

What's more impressive is that the show didn't have nearly the budget of ST, SeaQuest, or many of its contemporaries.

Forgive some of its low-budget issues when you do see them, and just wait for it.

hehehe Yeah, it was definitely low budget early on. Amazing how well it turned out.

I bought all the B5 DVD's, watched them once and plan to watch them again.

The outstanding feature of B5 is that the storyline was created whole, as opposed to the episodic nature of most other televised SF series. Unfortunately, this strength is missed by those who just drop in for one or two shows - like any soap opera, it requires the viewer stick with it front to back.

It return you get phenomenal character development; while the Narn G'kar is by far the most interesting, in my opinion, most of the major characters also evolve significantly.

It has one of the better backdrops of any SF series. There is no comparing the clearcut good guy/bad guy setups of shows like Star Trek/Star Wars with the slow reveal and conflicting nature of B5's movers and shakers.

I also think season three is where things really pick up. Unfortunately, due to a wrangle with the network the fourth season was rushed. Unsure that there was going to be a fifth season, the author had to advance the conclusion by an entire year. It sucks when such a finely planned story was botched by network nitwits.

In short - stick with it and you will be rewarded.
