"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

there are a lot of songs which should just be left alone.
having said it's often nice to hear a different interpretation of a song and there are certainly a lot of covers/remixes that are miles better than the original.
btw vince, you heard shinehead's cover of billy jean?
"The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.
"The most obvious predicition about the future is that it will be mostly like the past" - Alain de Botton
I've never heard that one - she must sound utterly ridiculous...
Oh, what a lucky man!

The copy I have is a bad recording from a concert. Its funny because when she started into the song you can hear people in the audience sounding confused. Its great.
Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012
When I was younger I thought curfews were silly, but now as the daughter of a young woman, I appreciate them. - Rah
"Yay Apoc!!!!!!!" - bipolarbear
"At least there were some thoughts went into Apocalypse." - Urban Ranger
"Apocalype was a great game." - DrSpike
"In Apoc, I had one soldier who lasted through the entire game... was pretty cool. I like apoc for that reason, the soldiers are a bit more 'personal'." - General Ludd
With the dub version, she is the song, and having seen her perform live with whip, you wouldn't dare to disagree.
The Byrds: Mr Tambourine Man
I'm sorry, but I've tried, Hattie Carroll and Tom Thumb know I've tried, but Mr Zimmerman's corncrake asthmatic with gravel and glue voice just doesn't butter my parsnips.
However, his songs when performed by others do float my boat, viz. :
Bryan Ferry's 'A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall'
Nina Simone: 'Just Like A Woman'
Isaac Hayes: 'By The Time I get To Phoenix'
Mr. Hayes became famous for his extraordinary epic workouts of single length songs (such as his treatment of 'Walk On By' on the same album as this song) and with this cover he turned a C & W/Folk song into a premature soundtrack for the kind of films that were eventually produced in the 90s . I'd recommend 'Hot Buttered Soul' to anyone who hasn't heard it.
Marianne Faithfull: Trouble In Mind
Marianne post convent schoolgirl voice, Marianne as heroin addict with one foot in the grave, her voice stained and cracked with harsh experience, sings this on the soundtrack of the Alan Rudolph film 'Trouble In Mind', and never has a desire to lay down on that lonesome railroad track sounded so sincere and so imminent. I'd also recommend her version of 'The Ballad of the Soldier's Wife'.
Tricky 'Black Steel'.
Subverting the song by getting Martina to sing lead , this is rap transmuted into trip hop dementia territory with clattering metallic electronica, jumpy beats and tripped out mad schoolgirl vocals. It's great to work out to as well...
Hot buttered Hayes:
