The corporate masters of Google are even more benevolent than first believed. According to Slashdot, when faced with the same request from the scumbag administration, AOL, Yahoo & MSN all said yes. And quickly.

May the courts do what is just and strike this lawsuit down. With prejudice. And quickly.

Why doesn't Bush just ask the Chinese for the information?

My thoughts exactly. Google is happy to comply with far worse requests from the Chinese, but in USA it plays innocent. Sorry Google, you lost your virginity in this long ago...

Does Google report searches and IP addresses to China? I thought they just self-censored their results for queries originating inside China (due to Chinese pressure)

That was my understanding as well.

China blocked access to Google unless they censored their results.

At least they didn't roll over on this matter like MSN, AOL, and Yahoo.

This is a stupid action, but for an unexpected reason.

Google's stock price dropped over 8% today. There's not much news, so some may blame the drop on this otherwise insignificant subpoena.

                          Bush killed Google!

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I wonder how much longer will it be before Google has enough money to buy out the US Government.

Leading internet search company Google has agreed to censor some of its services in China in order to satisfy Beijing's restrictions on free speech.
Google hopes the new web address for China will boost its access to one of the world's largest internet markets.

The company says the decision to censor content was hard, but says it has more influence if it is present in China.

Critics warn the censored version could restrict access to thousands of terms and web sites for Chinese users.

Topics which may be blocked include independence for Taiwan and the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

                                Drake:

                                Rolling over for China
Not rolling over for the US

Ideally, Google shouldn't roll over for China either, but... guess Google kinda felt it should pick its battles. After all, all those Chinese haxxors and such...
