Now, conversely, how does one call the UK from France? I have a cell phone that starts with 077, but how do you particularly dial from France itself?

That's slightly harder.

The international code for the UK is 44

so it'll be +44 77

The + being the international dialing code which in france apparently varies from telephone company to telephone company. But here they are:

00 (France Telecom)
40 (TELE 2),
50 (OMNICOM)
70 (LE 7 CEGETEL),
90 (9 TELECOM)
