  • Tony Blair to head United Nations?

Kofi Annan's final term will expire by the end of the year, and a new Secretary General must be elected.

I read that Bill Clinton has suggested that British PM Tony Blair be the new head of the world organisation. "It would suit me. He'd be good.", Clinton said.

Personally, I think Blair deserves much better.. What do you think?

I think it's a great idea. Then he will no longer be our PM

Actually though, after the Iraq debacle, I think he is an appalling candidate - he has completely undermined the UN before and to appoint him as Secretary-General would be a death blow to the UN.

No. Illegal war and all that.

On the contrary, he helped put an end to Iraq's non-compliance with no less than 19 U.N. resolutions. Surely that couldn't work against him.

That's Iraq's lack of compliance, which does not justify the US and UK's lack of compliance.

You're right, we should get someone from France instead. I know for sure they'll make sure something like the Oil for Food scandal will never happen again.

Bush's lapdog as head of UN? That doesn't really appeal to me...

I thought it was always going to be someone from an unimportant country. Has the UK fallen that low for Blair to be even a consideration?

According to Clinton, no one from any of the five permanent members will ever be UN Secretary. The other permanent members would all veto.

This was in reply to a question about him possibly being the next UN Gen Sec.

I think Slick Willy would be a fun Secretary General.

I think Clinton would make a fantastic Gen Sec. Every time I hear that man speak, I am forced to respect him a little more.

Wouldn't Clinton be disqualified for the same reason Sandman brought up for Blair?
