After he reported the massacre to the higher ups, he lost his escorts on missions. Normally a scout helicopter, like the one Thompson flew, would have two gunships escorting. After Mi Lai, he was only escorted by another scout heli. These helis have no major armament, and he was shot down five times during the war, the final time breaking his back.

When he returned home from Vietnam, he began getting death threats. When he went to the officers club, all the other officers would leave. He was summoned to Congress to testify about the massacre during secret hearings, and one Congressman said that only person that should be imprisoned was Thompson.

It wasn't until 60 Minutes did a profile on him that he began to get the recognition he deserved. He finally earned a medal for his heroism, and after the the 60 Minute piece, military schools began asking for him to come speak about soldier ethics. He was one of the very first inductees into the Airman Hall of Fame (if I got the name right).

This man was treated shamefully by our government for 20 years until the media finally got his story out. At least he finally got the recognition and treatment he deserved.

For the 60 Minutes piece, he traveled back to Mi Lai and met two of the people who's lives he saved that day. He said in a later interview that he still can't forgive the men who committed the massacre.
