    • Maybe I'll vote for this chick:

      Juliet Burgess

Party: The Green Party of Canada

      Age: 18

Career background: Working to advance skills as a photographer

Community activities: Has been involved in local activism since a young age, including election campaign work with the Green Party. She is also involved as a member of an independent theatre company in Calgary, and volunteers with local human rights organizations

Where the majority gets their say ( in theory) is in the writing of the laws in the first place

THis is not quite correct either. Techically a judge is supposed to apply the law as it is written even if he does not feel it is "right" ( assuming no Charter violations)

But the reality is that if they were explained , 95% of the people would agree with 95% of court decisions 95% of the time

I do believe that there is room to criticize the decision, and it is being talked about. Someone on the radio just this morning was wondering about the combination of sex in public establishments with age of consent at 14...

BTW, was there a particular reason why you wanted to reignite this?
Reignite?? wow I never thought our previous discussion was anything other than cool and dispassionate

No particular reason-- I just watched the debate and read the paper today and remembered that you believed there would be a backlash on the issue. I haven't seenone and wondered if you had. Just curious . . . nothing sinister

Since there is evidence you have a pulse, that desire may be sufficient ( well for about half the ridings in the country)

                • I'm also going to have a respectable job by then and be a fairly articulate man in his late 20s to early 30s.

I don't mind standing as a sacrificial lamb...

I even voted for one of those NDP sacrificial lambs in a no-hope riding. I knew the guy and just gave him a vote because he was/is a real good guy and everyone including himself knew that getting 10% of the vote would be a major upset

I believe there is a growing backlash against 'liberalism' on this issue and many others.

Smuggled guns used to shoot a teenager in Toronto? Ban guns! Good idea, Paul. Ban people from owning guns who are already under severe restrictions in their storage, transport, and use. Meanwhile, anyone can drive over a country road into Canada from the largest weapons market in the world...

Age of consent for sex with a child is 14. 40 year olds can get it on, and it's all legal. Now it would be legal in a locked room in a licensed business. These weren't Liberal initiatives, but they happened under their watch and it is part of the landscape that has a lot of people unhappy with how things are being run.

Judges giving conditional sentences for serious crimes, or allowing a known criminal access to guns, which ended up in a dead cop. Courts that don't keep dangerous people out of circulation for any length of time that could be judged as reasonable, which resulted in 4 dead Mounties. A government that is so afraid of guns that armed border guards are a no-no, while a flood of illegal guns cross that border and are used to murder children Christmas shopping with their parents.

People pissed off about overly lax policies on a number of social and criminal issues is as much a part of this election as scandal, if the recent numbers in Quebec and Ontario are to be believed.

I'm at the stage where I may just vote, an vote Conservative, just because the Liberal party is showing just how petty they are. That the party is corrupt and criminal is just that much more obvious now.
