  • --"In the book and in the first movie there WAS a clear rationalization as to why they sent the infantry in - the simple fact that the bugs lived in holes and COULDN't be wiped out with nukes. In the movie they even show air support napalming a whole bunch of bugs. "

It should also be noted that the infantry in the book wore heavy powered armor (think Elementals if you're familiar with MechWarrior) equipped with all sorts of fancy detection, C&C, etc, technology, not to mention the heavy weapons. The movie abandoned this completely because they wanted you to be able to see all the pretty faces. Horrible, horrible movie.

Scifi author defended scifi from accusation that 90% was crud by saying "90% of everything is crud."

It should therefore be no wonder that scifi movies and series are crap. When they start out with scifi source material that isn't crap...

WHY, OH, WHY must they render it back down to the crap it rose above to illumine our minds?

      • Hmm...

Matrix 2 and 3. I thought the original Matrix was average (except for the special effects), but watchable, while 2 and 3 were crap.

That Cronenberg movie, eXistenZ or something. Utter crap.

Battlefield Earth. I don't think it's as horrible as some people do, but it was pretty horrible nonetheless.

Starship Troopers. One giant plothole, pathetic acting.

            • Why hasn't anyone mentioned Soylent Green. I just saw that movie. It's awful. Nothing happens. Chuck is a detective but his detecing prowess comes up with nothing. He wanders around having sex with furniture.

His old buddy friend guy is the only one who figures things out, but tacky storytelling techniques obscure the horrible horrible truth when it's told first to the dude and then to Chuck.

The only good thing about this movie is Heston yelling, "IT'S PEOPLE!!!!!!?!!!111111".

The back of the DVD praised the movie's special effects. The only effect I recall was the use of bright red paint for blood. Couldn't even get ketchup...

TV: Has to be "V" (although there were a couple of hot chicks in it.)

I loved The Last Starfighter and Tron - when they were originaly released.

The saddest thing about this movie is that it has some good actors.

                          • If we are talking about movies that convey absolutley nothing of the meaning from the original book, Starship Troopers was abused far more than Contact.

Seaquest is the worst SciFi TV hands down, Wing Commander only saving grace is I sort of like the Capital Ship models, but otherwise worst movie.

                            • i have to defend seaquest here, even though i only remember a talking dolphin and some guy diving under a door.... it was a good show. stargate SG-1 and Stargate atlantis are great, (SG-1 is better) the new Battlestar galactica is more of a soap opera than a sci-fi show, IMHO isn living up to its potential

                              • It's a soap opera that brings up interesting ideas concerning religion and violence and artificial intelligence and all sorts of good things. I think the best thing science fiction does is to make us think about difficult concepts. It doesn't have to be flashy technology. It's about concepts. And I think the new BSG does this incredibly well.
