You can get a decent Toyota Corolla (97 or 98) for 8k. I'd pick that over the Tercel.

There are buyer's guides that go into all of this. Consumer Reports has a good one.
Hyundai turned themselves around in the last couple of years. Their cars used to suck really, really bad. Now they're scoring well on reliability, etc.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Buy a cheap alternator and do it myself.. (But how.. )
Easy, remove the 2 bolts, remove the strap, remove alternator, put new one in, install first bolt, install strap tighten strap with second bolt, your done. 30 minutes tops.-Never argue with an idiot; He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

I can't believe they are going to soak you 400.00 dollars for an alternator. Thats almost the price you paid for the car.
They are easy to change. Go to an auto parts store or junkyard and get a cheap one. Switch the alternators and then drive it till it drops.
Better than car payments each month.
btw.. check the oil in your transmission.
