  • The Future Of Media

The animation is approximately ten minutes long, don't know the size in MB. It discusses the future of media in a somewhat dramatic fashion. The conclusion is pessimistic and I disagree with it, but I highly recommend the animation:

    EDIT:
    New version:
    http://epic.makingithappen.co.uk/new-master1.html (~13 MB)

Now, my question for the forum is: do you use any of these "social networks"? I have a vague idea of what they are, I don't use them. The one mentioned in the link is "friendster". Anyone used that? Also, Microsoft's "newsbot" is mentioned, anyone used that?

This is quite an interesting field for me. In the future, I am quite certain, we will all be producers of content. Maybe you were on a scene of an accident and have the best early photo, and maybe you just write entertaining posts about beating up punks. Everyone is going to be a producer, but that's not the intriguing thing.

The intriguing thing is the organization of all that information. Just imagine - a software that analyzes what your friends read, weights that according to some algorithms and gives you recommendations. Even better - a software that manipulates facts to tailorsuit your needs as an obedient consumer sheep Informed Individual.

Everyone is not only going to be a producer, but also an editor for friends and colleagues. Where this will lead I don't know. I mean, we do it now too, but technology will accelerate it, improve it and eventually strip us of our control over what we recommend, to whom, when and so on.

Yeah, my post is long, but that is what I do when I am in a philosophical mood. Just see the flash and let me know what you think

Posted before, and I still think it is thought provoking although a bit alarmist.

Print is dead, but it is a mistake to think that the publishers of print, and their zeitgeist, will share the same fate.

It'll just move more towards digital. If anything, it could help the industry. Many cities became 1 newspaper cities mainly because of paper costs.

Indeed. I can't imagine abandoning professional journalism for some soup cooked up by bots from Microsoft and Google.

OTOH, print who want to charge for digital access are dinosaurs.

Well the whole free news and paying for some of the features seems to be working in the industry quite well actually.

I clicked it. Got bored after something like 5 minutes... it was then in '01, I think, and going roughly 1 minute per year. Boring speech, boring music, useless images.

Pay for what sort of features? Access to articles?

Paying someone to organize the data for you? To feed you the most relevant stuff? To be your personal news editor (though having other clients too) perhaps? I think money can be made in the system.

Why should I pay someone to predigest the world for me?

Putting up with bias from reporters and writers of the primary sources is enough. Why would I pay someone to decide which of those already biased articles I should read?

ABC, BBC, CBC, CNN, the Guardian, the Star, Canoe, The Times of India, etc...

If I want to find out what is going on in the world I only have to look. Why would I pay to submit to a filter of the wealth of news and viewpoints that are available for free?
