Actually IIRC LOTR was wrote before WWII so you should be trying to use WWI as the analogy here.

No, it was finished before the end of the war. Tolkein fought in the trenches in WW1. While not an anology, clearly the two wars had an influence on him. Example, in LOTR, this was the second war between Sauron and the Alliance.
