I just received this communique from the union here in L.A.
Albertsons has threatened to sell dozens of local stores—to themselves! Albertsons wants to close their unionized stores, get rid of the current workers, and open as part of a new chain, which they also own.
Damn I had no idea a freaking supermarket was raking in 42 BILLION good lawd!

So, it was formally announced that Albertsons will not be accepting any bids for the entire company, and has pulled out of the sales as of now, although it is looking at possibly selling some of its underperforming stores.
Being from Georgia, I'm kinda at a loss over this. I'm used to enjoying the warmness of modern Krogers and Publixes.

In other areas: I'm glad places like Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion aren't gaining marketshare--it's time for companies with piss-poor names such as those to go under.
As far as Albertson's, it's my understanding some of its woes are due to places like Wal-Mart offering groceries and one-stop shopping.

I stopped by my local Albertson's yesterday afternoon. There were big signs up: "Closing Our Doors. Everything Must Go." I didn't recognize any of the employees in the store. They must have layed off the regular workers already.

Never heard of it before, but at first glance, I'd think it was pronounced MY-er.

In Southern California the reason for the strike last year and for Albertson's deciding to sell itself has been Walmart's move into the grocery business. Basically a nonunion store (Walmart) is undercutting all the union shops so they're being closed or shut down.
