So what, exactly, is the policy? That one crime deserves another? Do you think the Palestianian refugees were somehow responsible for the Jews who lost their Arab lands?

Only if you had all his hardline backers in a row with him.

the policy with all post WW2 exchanges of populations was that once done it was done. Happened between India and Pakistan, Poles left areas annexed to USSR, in turn Poles went in to areas formerly German, as did Czechs. As MarkG will remind us, there were major exchanges in the Balkans before and after WW1. No rights of return in any of those cases - those who left, did not remain stateless, but were absorbed in their own national states, though with modified borders.

Those Palestinians who have not established new lives in the Arab world (where there have been deliberate attempts to keep them from starting new lives, in part at least to keep the issue alive vis a vis Israel) may return to the new Palestinian state to be established as a result of negotiations with Israel. Compensation for lost properties will need to be determined, but in deciding how much Israel should compensate them, (as opposed to Arab states) the uncompensated loss of Jewish property in the Arab world will need to be taken into account.

In the year 2005 there are, as far as I am aware, no refugees to be repatriated from those cases. There are no longer German refugees waiting in camps on the Polish border, kicked out of Poland at the end of WWII. There are, however, Palestinian refugees in the year 2005, making any attempt to dismiss it as "past history" ridiculous.

This is a convenient way of blaming all Arabs for the actions of a select few Arab leaders.

I'm going to give it up - I don't want to threadjack this entirely. Suffice it to say that I think the analogy of Jews in the ME and Muslim immigrants in Europe is a very poor one.

Correct, and the question is why? Palestinians have been kept in refugee camps, and prevented from integrating into the countries to which they moved, in part as a deliberate method of keeping up the claim on Israel. The Arabs have done something that the Germans, Pakistanis, Indians, Macedonians, etc did NOT do - use refugees as a political tool.

Im not blaming anyone. History happens. Wars happen. Im merely saying it was not unreasonable of the Israeli govt in 1949 and 1950 to keep the Pals out, and use their abandoned property to resettle Jewish refugees. The question is what is the best thing to do about it now. And I think compensation is appropriate, and the considerations i raised above need to be included in discussions of compensation.

Though the exploitation of refugees is probably more common than that, I generally agree. It's a deplorable tactic, and has certainly made the whole situation much more difficult.

Nevertheless, the claim they have is not entirely manufactured; whether scared into leaving by the Arabs or scared into leaving by the Israelis (likely some of both), they were basically chased and deceived out of their land and prevented by both sides from either having it back or attaining some kind of recompense through diplomacy.

Okay, now I'm really done. No more.

How many of the "refugees" today were actually around back in the day?

Indeed one might wonder why the Iranian president bothered to deny the holocaust since the situation of the Palestinians stands as an issue on its own?
