While in general I don't support schools that ban army recruiters, they should have as much a right to be there as any other group. However, since this measure is narrowly tailored enough to not just be anti-military, but anti-discrimination, I think its more of a good idea.

People here seem to be saying that the military shouldn't discriminate, but these are just a bunch of whiney college students. However, I think its the other way around. These students are actually doing something about their convinctions and not simply whinning about them on a message board.

Ya know, like all those whiney people who complained about aparthied by boycotting south africa. This is a boycott with a valid political reason, and I support it. Good for the ASWC.

Discriminating against gay and lesbian people for employment is illegal in the UK (IIRC), and rightly so, IMHO. As long as this applies to all employers who refuse to employ homosexual people, I'm all for it.

Its a private institution, why shouldn;t they be able to keep the Army out?

NOt being able to recruit within the confines of a liberal arts college isn;t going to hurt the army any- just set up office right outside. What, people can't walk a block?

The Act specifically bans the Army, citing discrimination. One could argue that this is because the army is the only discriminitory recruiter on campus, but the Act does specifically mention only the Army. It would take another act if, say, the Boy Scouts of America were recruiting college students for some reason.

Which is all you need to know that it has nothing to do with discrimination and everything to do with Iraq. If it was about discrimination, they wouldn't have written the declaration solely about the Army. It would've covered all discriminatory institutions.

So they're wrong and they're being a bunch of whiny ass bints who are denying their fellow students the opportunity to earn a living, earn college $$, and serve their country.

            ****wits.

I'm inclined to agree. The singular, specific nature of the Act seems rather damning - while fighting discrimination may be admirable, this doesn't appear to be the major concern of ASWC.

Would they prevent Catholic priests from recruiting there as well?

Do Catholic priests recruit on college campuses?

Haven't the foggiest. Priests have to come from somewhere, and while there is a vow of celibacy, it's not a vow of virginity. So why not?

I don't know. It certainly is not banned as far as I am aware. I have never seen a Catholic recruiter (or whatever they call them) at the school.

ASWC provides funds to the Christian group on campus, which does contain Catholics, but I don't think that's particularly notable.

                            Because I hate myself.

But seriously, I brought up Catholicism because women can't attain the priesthood.

Oh I see. Catholicism isn't any different than the army with gender though. Just think of priesthood as a combat arms MOS.

That's precisely my point. And it's legal, or else the Catholic church wouldn't be able to hire priests here in the US.
