Really? I recall a Cab driver in Bahrain who had a few choice words to say about "The dark-skinned ones"...in presence of one of my liberty buddies, who was black.

(actually, it turned out he was talking about "The Baluchis", not "His African Brothers")

The guys who really leave Apolyton don't post threads about it. They just go.

So when will you be back?

        Don't get engaged!
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

In 2 weeks, it's the first sentence of this thread.

                  And I'm back...

but tired. I slept for a good 8 hours (calling in sick), and I wanted to sleep a bit more because of the looong flight, but I just couldn't anymore... a wierd component of jetlag?

So it was... ok. I only got really sick for one, maybe 1.5 days . Though I did have this cold for a bit longer (and still a bit today). A lot of people find themselves sick for far longer.

So anyway, Karachi is D-I-R-T-Y! We stayed in the nice part of town, which consists of basically mini-forts. Each of the homes in that area is walled off, and the spaces between them are places where people throw their crap away (no littering laws). And, of course, you see the poor pick through the garbage for scraps. You think the rich/poor divide is big in the US! Oh, you haven't seen anything! And my family over there is basically upper middle-class rather than rich (a LOT of mini-forts over there).

Traffic laws don't exist. Lanes are merely suggestions, as are red lights. You go where you want, when you want and use the horn a lot. It's a total mess. And the 'mid-sized' car is a Corolla or Civic! A Camry or Accord is a large car!!

We also flew up to Lahore for the big parts of the wedding. Lahore is much nicer! Still dirty, still traffic Hell, but they have fountains at intersections (don't drink the water!! ) and some nice historical sites. Went to some really big mosque and the Fort of Lahore. Some of the archetecture and gardens are fabulous. And some parts even seem like they aren't even 3rd world .

The wedding was annoyingly long. They had all these parties (which were exactly the same) until the actual wedding started. And the younger crowd (by which I mean 20 to 40), stayed out until like 5, 6, 7 and never got enough sleep to make up for it. That part wasn't so bad, but by the time the wedding actually started I wanted to come back home. The food was pretty good though .

And they have more then 4 channels! YAY! Back in '92, it was 4 or 5 government channels. Now they have cable! And most of the stuff is Indian TV, but they have movie channels with uncut American movies. I guess it is 'officially' the Islamic Republic and there is no alcohol or food, but the cable will show some unIslamic things sometimes....

Speaking of TV, I got to watch some cricket one day matches. Wasn't horrible, but when you don't have anything else to do it can work. If you do have errends to run, the full day match kind of runs long. Fun to watch, but not for all day. And I saw a LOT of soccer... a lot of English Premier League and the Toyota World Club Championship. And amazingly they even show American football sometimes... I got to see the Steelers-Bears game on the Monday right after it was played. It was surreals wearing a t-shirt in Karachi watching the snow in Pittsburgh.

So that's about it, I guess...

Somehow I don't think he would have enjoyed that one.
