They're 30 minutes late. I friend said he left work late (he worked a half day) and both of them still need to pack. I could have worked a half day.

I shall make the best of it. Since I won't be driving today I've decided to start drinking Pacifico beer from Mazatlan.

For me yes but for most people it is a paid day. Because I am a new employee I am in the "probationary period" where you don't get little things like paid days off. Well, not entirely true since I do get all government holidays off with pay (things like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, etc) but I don't get to just take paid days off until after my 90 day probationary period is over.

I was highered through a temp agency on a temp to perm basis. That means for 90 days I work for the temp agency and then my real employer has the option of picking me up without paying a finder's fee (if they want to higher me before 30 days they can but must pay a finder's fee). Since there is currently a shortage of geologists and I do a great job for them (or so my boss and my boss's boss tell me) it is highly likely I will be picked up at the end of 90 days and get a sizable raise since they will no longer have to pay the temp agency a cut of my fee. I am currently dating the women who works for the temp agency so I know that they get a 25%-30% cut of my gross wages. I currently get paid $20 per hour but the company I work for pays the temp agency is paid $29 (I know since my girl friend is the one who hired me) from the company. That means after 90 days I get hired on by the company and the temp agency disappears from the scene.

Likely I will get some of that $9 per hour and likely the company will keep some of it. I'm expecting at least an average of a $5 per hour raise (though I will be classified as a salaried and exempt employee which is why I don't feel bad about shorting them a day now). I also rent out two rooms in my house so I get a bit extra there. I'm not a rich man but I do well considering I'm just one guy without a family to support.

B@stards. I remember a few years (eight, now that I think about it - crap, time flies) back when I was living in Vancouver, me and two buddies were going to take a road trip down to San Fran. One of my friends was also my roomate, and we told the other guy to be at our place at 9:00 so we could get a reasonably early start and miss the Seattle rush hour. He showed up at 3:00.

And it's always more convince if you go home sick rather than call in sick.

You: I'm really feeling terrible. I hope I don't throw up.
Boss: Egad! Go home! Feel better! Don't throw up here!

my boss will ocassionally say "go home", more so as a joke than as a suggestion.

we all say ok, and go home

I wouldn't do a thing like that until after several years with the same employer. I've done it a few times to play Civ while having only a minor head ache or something But I've never called in sick without having any symptom at all.
