  • Am I a bad employee?

I called in sick today so I could go with some friends on a three day road trip down Baja. I've only been working there for 5 weeks but the surf is calling me. Tacos and Mexican beer won this tug-a-war.

On the upside I'm all packed and my friends should show up in an hour or so. Next stop Puerta Nueva for dirt cheap all you can eat lobster & schooners of Tecate then it is on to surfing and clubbing in Ensenada.

No, you're an awesome employee. That sounds most excellent.

The goal is to leave Ensenada early tomorrow and stop in La Paz for lunch then on to Cabo San Lucas for deep sea fishing and yet more clubbing. Sunday we'll drive back either by going back up Baja or by taking the ferry over to the mainland and driving up the east side of the Gulf of California.

Another 7 weeks. I figure I work enough unpaid over time that they'll let it slide. Not good but I'm more afraid of waking up one day when I'm 60 and wishing I'd done stuff like this.

I might have waited til the probationary period was up but if you do work unpaid overtime, they probably will let it slide.

See, you shouldn't call in sick. You should just say "I'm taking a day." Your employer isn't your parent, and they don't deserve an excuse beyond that of "I have X days-off and I need to take one today."
