If by "high-end" you mean comparatively "low-end" projection TVs ("big screen on a budget"), then sure.

The best picture quality comes from Plasma and LCD displays, which are not designed and not manufactured in America.

They still make calculators AFAIK, but mostly they just make chips now. There's a good reason why they stick with this. They are experts at chips and chips are where the profit's at.

TI's chips are in tons of cell phones now, too.

Sorry Asher. That's not a correct statement. This is not an area where you know much.

I'm in tech stores all the time, Projection Screens suck because of the viewing angle alone.

DLP is about 5 years too late.

I still cling to my Sony WEGA XBR.

And don't tell me this is an area you know much about, I remember very distinctly your thread years ago about open source chips.

Well, you're wrong. Let's just leave it at that.

Kiss my ass Dannyboy, you're a looney if you think that RPTVs offer better practical picture quality than a high-end Plasma or LCD TV. Let's just leave it at that.

RPTV may offer very good performance if you're a loser that lives alone (so the one person can sit in the perfect-viewing-angle seat) in a room custom-built with the proper light characteristics to provide good picture. In the real world, that's s bunch of horse****.

You really are going to opine about a technical area about which you know jack ****? You're as bad as a low-rent attorney.

I pay attention to the home theatre segment, I'm a hifi whore -- I'm sure you would know that if you saw me even in the digital music threads where I blasted 1G-4G iPods for their lacking audio fidelity.

Let's compare Plasma to DLP, for starters.

                            Contrast ratio: Plasma is better
Color accuracy: Huge Plasma advantage (DLPs tend to be hazier)
Viewing angle: ~100 degree for DLP, 180 degree ("perfect") for Plasma

I'm going to be nice and not even mention the "rainbow effect" problem with DLPs (except for this sentence )

Definition is much better with DLPs than plasma -- especially important when you're watching hockey in HD. Color accuracy is better for DLPs than plasma at the high end (i.e., 3-chippers instead of the color wheel). Viewing angle is more than sufficient for the vast majority of people. Contrast is really quite good with DLPs, especially with TI's new chips.

If you want to argue that LCOS is better than DLP as a general matter, then we could have a good argument. But on a bucks for image basis, DLP is superior to plasma.

Excuse me? Are you for real?

There are native HDTV resolutions for both DLPs and Plasma.

Color accuracy is better for DLPs than plasma at the high end (i.e., 3-chippers instead of the color wheel).
Got anything to back that up? This is the first time I've heard anyone say this, all of the reviews/articles I've read and sets I've seen show higher color accuracy on Plasma sets. Further, would this only be in certain environments with low-light (one of the many "achilles heel"s of projection sets in general).

Further still, how many DLP sets use 3 chips instead of the color wheel? Almost all the ones you see use the color wheel.

Viewing angle is more than sufficient for the vast majority of people.
I disagree strongly, it's the main reason I got a CRT HDTV over a large RPTV. That and the external light issues...
