I didn't realize there were so many chavez supporters here. I'm neither for or against him and don't really care if he helps the people there or not, I'm just curious how far you all will take your support of him. This will be interesting to watch cause my guess is he will continue to stretch legitmacy and it will be entertaining indeed to watch how they are explained here

I think it's fairly obvious that Chavez is very popular in Venezuela. There is no reason to rig an election there.

Chavez won fair, the oligarchs saw they were going to lose the election and retired to damage the legitimacy of the process, Chavez would have won even had they presented their candidates.

lets see Chavezs party and its allies won every single seat. That beats Perv, who in his last legislative election had supporting parties win less than 50% of the seats.

Oh, and the turnout was 25%. How low does the turnout have to be for a boycott to be successful, anyway? I mean this makes Sunni Arab turnout in Iraq look respectable.

75% of the electorate is oligarchs?

He is a savy, charismatic populist leader who has the courage to act for the poor and to stand up to the traditional bully of the region.
And he's the first winning politician who isn't a member of the oligarchal class. He's not particularly radical, although he portrays himself as being such. Basically, he's just a New Dealer. That looks radical in Latin America, which has generally been organized around the principle that 15% of the population screws over everyone else. I'd take any sort of change over the previous 50 years of crap.

Whatever you think of him, the Venezuelans seem to like him. There's no reason to think that the vote wasn't legitimate, and the same goes for the last US election.

so is he going reliberalize the press law?

Bingo. The boycott was all about making sure that thier "the majority actually supports us" meme was protected so they can legitimize any coup they hatch against Chavez.
