Bah! The French promised to fight to the end and said they'd even sail French ships to British ports before surrendering. Instead the Vichy government held on to most of the French fleet and it seemed that all the Germans had to do is threaten Vichy in order to get their way. That meant if the Germans threatened to burn Paris (or some other city ) it was possible the French might turn over their fleet to the Germans. The British weren't going to let the world's fourth largest fleet become an outrigger for the German Navy. The prefered to sink the French ships then risk letting the Germans have them.

The Napoleonic reforms were largely undone by the same "reactionaries" after he was defeated.

The liberties we enjoy today were brought to us by the lower class in the 19th century

Admittedly, sinking them was unnecessary. They could have just sneaked a small commando unit on board and hidden the white flags.

BAH! The 19th century people were so behind the times. All the cool countries had their liberties secured in the 18th or 17th centuries.

                Reactionaries
We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln

What country had it's "liberties secured" in the 17th C?

England had a civil war, a Glorious Revolution, and a 'Bill of Rights'.

Not sure if he meant them though.

                      Carillon

                      The Battle of Carillon

The British began mobilizing all their resources in order to crush New France. They decided to use Lake Champlain to overrun the defenses of Canada. On July 12, 1758, 15 000 British soldiers attacked Carillon. At 3 000 soldiers, the French troops were vastly outnumbered, and yet they succeeded in putting their adversaries to rout.
                      What?

The French Revolution stands in the annals of history as one of the most badly managed revolutions ever. They probably set back the cause of democracy in Europe by 25 to 50 years.

Well, the Russian revolution set back the cause of communism in the world by at least a century...
