On 2 December 1985 I was called up to start my training as a voluntary conscript with the Royal Guards.

5 months of infantry training, 1 month of preparatory guard drill exercise and 3 months of guard duty at the Royal palaces in Copenhagen and Ã…rhus, as well as other installations, followed.

Interesting times, not least in hindsight. But I have to say it does make me feel a bit old to think that it has already been 20 years.

More like half a day..

But as it happens, the Royal Guard at Amalienborg (the King's residence) did offer resistance, as one of only a handful of Danish army units. Gunfight ensued, and there were casualties, both Danish and German, at Amalienborg in the morning hours of 9 April 1940, until an order was given by the King himself to cease fighting.
