I rememeber my dad saying that, when he heard the news, his reaction was that Truman would somehow figure out a way to lose WW II.

I remember when the Ayatollah Khomeini died, and at his funeral the mob was so hysterical that they knocked his body out of its casket.

Iremember Kennedy's death. One of our teachers became so distraught that my 6th grade teacher had to be pulled from our classroom to calm her down and reassure her class. When I got home I was surprised to find my mom working around the house as if nothing had happened. When I told her the news she threatened to wash my mouth out with soap for telling such a whopper. I convinced her to check my story out by turning on the TV before executing the sentence. On the tube LBJ was being sworn in. When she finally realised what had happened she dropped onto the sofa as if someone had pulled hed feet oput from under her and she began to cry.

I expect many Americans will be familiar with the death/disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

Churchill's was news over here- as was Michael Collins' in Ireland.

                Musical deaths:

Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin- a trio of deaths which I've been told by those older than me signalled for them the real end of the Sixties.

The death of the man at Altamont, clubbed by Hell's Angels.

The Baader Meinhof mass suicide I remember, as well as Jonestown.
Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

...patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone. Edith Cavell, 1915

Not going on merit here, just fame.

As, it would now appear, was one of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Unfortunately given the tenor of the times, they would always be 'guilty' of being Italian and anarchists, before any legal guilt could be established.

The same hysteria accompanied the cases of the Guildford Four and the Birmingham Six and the Maguires overe here- guilty of being Irish, or young and stupid.

Still, 'Sacco e Vanzetti' was a fine film.

The Challenger explosion. (If that counts.)
