  • Famous deaths of the 20th century

What are the most talked about deaths of the past century do you think? Which were (and are?) veiled in mystery, which were the ones people would remember impacting them the most - at the time and maybe for the rest of their lives?

My grandparents and parents, along with countless millions of others, continued to recall vividly what they were doing when they heard that John F. Kennedy had been shot.

Marilyn Monroe's untimely demise had a huge impact on people, and mystery continues to shroud the circumstances of her death. Her iconic fame has not diminished, and many are still mystified by who she was and how she left this earth.

Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Adolf Hitler, Mahatma Gandhi, the crew of Apollo I.. All and many more had, by their deaths and the way it came about, a profound influence on how posterity would view them, in some cases the rest of the world, and perhaps even one's own self.

So let's hear of some of the famous deaths you can think of.

Martin Luther King's assassination has to rank up there. And not least his own prophecies on the matter in a public speech the night before. If you have ever heard his speech from 3 April 1968 in Memphis, particularly his closing remarks.. it's chilling, and yet so unimaginably great to think that he would sacrifice all for his cause.

It's #15 on this list of speeches if you're interested..

James Dean's public image certainly benefitted from his death - and the way in which he died (automobile accident).

The plane crash of football team Manchester United in 1958, and that of Buddy Holly the following year, also must have influenced a lot of people.

doesn't everyone die? By that respect, every famous person will have a death. So what's the big deal it happened in the 20th century? Seems like more celebrity worship to me.
